Why Empathy is Very Important in Every Leadership

Empathy in leadership is the ability of a leader to comprehend the feelings and desires of his employees and act ethically towards them.

As far as every leadership is concerned empathy is one significant tool that rates high in leadership skills. An action that deals with understanding and responsiveness, because psychologically the leader can view their thoughts and needs.

The problem does not lie in the capacity to interpret what the employee is passing through. It lies in the ability to proffer solutions or help in solving the problem. It is in helping to solve the problem that makes the empathy complete.

Let us look at some vital reasons why empathy is important in leadership.

It shows a sense of care and value toward members

When members or followers realize that the leader is empathetic, it gives them some sense of belonging. They begin to see the leader as someone who understands what it means to be in a difficult situation. Maybe such a leader has undergone a series of trials in life.

Therefore, he can assume or be in their shoe and realize what they are passing through. This also shows a sign of maturity and the ability to bear one another’s burden

It encourages loyal friendship

When leaders show empathy, it could make the group members trustworthy, especially towards achieving organizational goals. Members will become more steadfast in their tasks.

This is because they would not want anything to come between their friendships with the leader. If on the contrary anything goes wrong and the privilege is abused the leader may suffer bitterness. This can lead to regrets and not compromising.

It builds Interpersonal relationship

Now, rather become strict and more interested in the growth of the workforce. It is best to utilize empathy towards members by being more flexible. This can give room to friendliness that can improve relationships. It can help the leader to avert team opposition and enable cooperation.

It can help when settling disputes among members

In times of conflict among members, empathy plays a vital role. It could help in understanding each member’s behavior and why they behave the way they do. The leader will be able to judge issues by understanding where each member is faulting. Then finally will give a fair verdict 

It improves team productivity

Leaders can use empathy to motivate their workforce by constantly checking on their performance to know where they are falling short. Again, ask about their wellbeing and demand feedback on why any member is not progressing in his or her task. This could help employees feel the need to be more active in their tasks. 

It promotes trust

Empathy could help leaders ascertain what any member is going through. Psychologically he will be able to understand when a member is seriously voicing out his or her opinion. In addition, know how to respond. The leader could confidently sympathize with the member. While the members have the assurance of a healthy work environment.

It gives room for confidential communication

Leaders can recognize how each member feels when a personal problem tends to affect workflow. Through empathy, he will comprehend their feelings and call for personal counseling. Being an understanding leader, any member can feel free to relate his problem.

It promotes mental wellbeing

If the leader is inflexible and more often a nagging person this could cause mental illness for some members. The atmosphere of the workplace may be full of anxiety and may lack concentration. This could affect a member’s mental health. Therefore, empathy can encourage confidence and ease of mind for the team.

It promotes collaboration

Understanding workers’ behavior and according to them, the due privilege could improve members’ performance and adherence to duty. It could introduce and help strengthen the leader-worker relationship. This relationship could help in reducing quarrels, malice, and rude traits.  

How leaders can develop empathy

First, you need to understand yourself, this includes how you feel. You can only do this if you have an inner conscience telling you what needs to be and what ought not to. Those actions have to be moral.

Secondly, once you can understand your emotions, the next is putting yourself in other people’s conditions. Feel their pain, and their joy. Understand how it feels when they present challenging issues to you. See a picture of yourself in any situation they are.

Thirdly, treat them as you would expect them to be if you were the very one it happened to.
